Cockroaches are insects that have been around for millions of years. Their ability to survive in almost any environmental conditions is what allows them to thrive and makes them so difficult to control. Many types of cockroaches live worldwide, but a handful have made themselves comfortable living near people. We need to guard our homes against cockroaches because of their tendency to spread disease and allergens and contaminate food. 

German, American, and oriental cockroaches regularly find their way into our Louisville homes. American and oriental cockroaches typically get inside our homes through cracks in the foundation, drains, vents, and other small openings. They usually move inside after being attracted by food odors and moisture. German cockroaches have adapted to living indoors with people and moving from structure to structure by hitchhiking in deliveries, boxes, furniture, and appliances.

Here are some helpful methods to prevent cockroach problems.

• Maintain a clean kitchen free of food debris.

• Inspect things you are bringing into your home for hitchhiking cockroaches. 

• Keep your home free of the clutter that can disguise a cockroach problem.

• Repair leaky pipes and fixtures and use dehumidifiers to reduce humidity levels in your home.
