A creature is stirring; yes, it is a mouse!

We all know and love that holiday poem this time of year. Oh wait, did I mess it up? Yes, you are correct, it is “…not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse…” But is it true for you? With colder weather upon us, and the holiday cheer in full bloom, we are all busy with shopping and preparing our homes for our loved ones to visit. But is your house ready for the invasion of furry little friends? To make this holiday poem ring true, follow our tips below to make your home completely pest free!
Complete a thorough inspection
– Before snow falls and covers your home and property. Go outside and walk around your home looking for any small, dime-sized hole where a mouse can fit in. Look both high and low, as mice are great climbers. Go into your attic; if you can see daylight through any holes, more than likely a mouse can fit in. Use a product like pest block or metal mesh wire to block entry points, since they will still allow air flow into your attic or crawl spaces.
– When you find holes, be proactive and seal them up with caulk, steel wool, or whichever building materials you prefer. Note: I would not suggest using expanding foam unless you first use steel wool to plug the hole, as mice can easily chew through the foam. Make sure you have a good crawl space door that closes flush with your home and leaves no gaps. Make sure your crawl space and attic vents don’t have any gaps or holes in them. If they do, use the pest block or metal hardware metal mesh wire to seal it up tight. Anything that will still give it air flow, but no other pests can enter in will do the trick.
Remove brush away from your home
– As a part of your inspection, look for hiding places where mice can rest and conceal themselves. Bushes, trees and shrubs, leaves nestled and tangled up against your home are perfect for these little creatures, and will provide them shelter from the cold weather. Trimming and cleaning up the yard debris will go a long way in making your home less desirable for critters such as these.
Declutter your home
– I know, it is so hard, especially this time of the year. Keeping your home neat and organized will help take away harborage places for any pests.
Store items in plastic bins
– Yes, they can chew through plastic, but plastic will defend your property better than cardboard boxes, and they are a lot easier to stack, organize and keep clean.
With these four simple tips, you can make your home pest free without poisonous rodenticides or dangerous traps. I do suggest the use of rodent bait stations on the outside of your home, but I advise you make sure it’s in a tamper resistant station so that non-targets, like children and pets, can’t get in.
